Our Doka Estate Laurina microlot was chosen for its unique varietal. La Laurina is exceptional because it is a naturally occurring low-caffeinated coffee. The Laurina varietal was first discovered in the 18th century in Africa. While the Laurina varietal spread to other regions, growing it was famously difficult. Its lack of caffeine - a natural pesticide for coffee plants - made Laurina more susceptible to insect damage.
The Laurina varietal was on the brink of extinction, but in recent years it has had a resurgence in popularity. The fact that Laurina is a unique alternative to decaffeinated coffee - and produces an elegant cup profile - has captured the attention of roasters across the U.S. Expect a delicate cup with excellent clarity, long and round with orange and spicy notes.
Our Laurina microlot comes from the Vargas family's, Doka Estate. The farm is located on the foothills of the famous Poas Volcano and has been owned and operated by the Vargas family for many generations. The unique microclimates and Volcanic soils of the region gives this microlot a soft and delicate cup profile.
The Vargas family has been an important player in the coffee community in Costa Rica for three generations. The family has grown their business to not only include coffee farming, but also processing, roasting and tourism.
